Time Management

Today's date is the 31st January and I  have completed 2/3 of the pieces, which are my double page spread and my cover of the magazine, and I am half way through my content page. This means I am on track to finish by Friday which is my deadline.

Audience Research 7

I have finished my Double Page spread however I have decided to try and put a background over it to make it look more like a professional story.
The before and after are below:

BEFORE:

AFTER:

I had a vote with my target audience to decided which was best, - again I took part in the vote:
BEFORE: 1
AFTER:   5

Because of this, I am going to keep the background in my double page spread.

Audience Research 6

For my double page spread, as shown in my sketched draft, I want a lot of the page to be covered in some big funky writing to really catch the readers eye, I have had a look on 'dafont.com' and have narrowed it down to the following 4:

I showed all of these to my focus group and had a vote about which they feel would be best - I also took part in the vote (1 being the font at the top of the page, 4 being the bottom font) the results are as followed:

Font 1 - 1
Font 2 - 2
Font 3 - 0
Font 4 - 3

This meant my final decision was to go with the 4th font, which is called 'Capture It' by Magique Fonts .

Time Management Update

Today it is the 23rd January and I have completed my Magazine Cover, which means I am on track with my previous time line of all my deadlines - I am now going to start my Content Page.

Audience Research 5

I have decided to name my magazine cover either 'GLAM' or 'GLAMOROUS ROCK' ..I asked my focus group which they thought would be more appropriate/which they preferred, and took a vote (again, I took part in the vote):

GLAM - 5
GLAMOROUS ROCK - 1

The main reasons for this was because although GLAM seems to sound less like a rock magazine, I am going to make it look like one with the way it is set out and the content of it, another reason is because it is short and easy to type across the page as my masthead and it will be easy to read, along with the fact that this still aims my magazine at a mainstream audience as well as the rock audience which is - 'glamorous rock.' The reasons against GLAMOROUS ROCK was mainly because it was too long to write across my masthead, although it would have been good as the word 'rock' is in the title of the magazine enhances the point that it is in fact a rock magazine. Weighing up all the pro's and con's, and especially looking at what my focus group thought of the two, I decided to call my magazine 'GLAM.'

Planning 4

On the previous blog post, I suggested to my focus group that I add more photographs to the magazine cover. After doing this, I also have decided to add more things and stories, to make it yet again, more busier on the page as this is exactly what all the other rock magazine's do to achieve good sales and a professional looking magazine cover.
Below is a more detailed and final plan/design of my final magazine cover.

KEY:
The 2 black boxes represent other pictures of Livv, as posters
The straight lines represent writing
The circle represents my models face
The star represents the star which is on my models face
The different colour long boxes represent extra information
The line up the right hand side of my magazine represents the website
The white box at the bottom right represents the bar code
The big pink box across the top is the masthead

Audience Research 4

After getting my original feedback from my focus group and agreeing it was okay, whilst actually producing my cover I found that compared to most for the other rock magazine's I have looked at, it seemed pretty plain seen as most of the rock magazine covers generally had a lot going on, some of them even had alternative pictures (for example in a 'poster special') Two of these are shown below:

Fortunately, I took an extra 2 photographs of the cover star, and so I suggested to my focus group that I add these 2 photo's to my front cover, (however editing them quite dramatically and cropping them) to add a poster special and to make the magazine cover a lot more busy, hopefully making it look more similar to the rock magazine which are on sale at the moment.
Below is some of my feedback: -

GGood plan I think, I think it should defo be busier than the 1st draft anyway seemed a bit plain xxxxxxxx

After reading these emails, I decided to put the two photographs which are below in to my magazine cover as well, as an additional add on poster special on the cover of my magazine.

Time Management Update

Planning 3

I  have now taken all of my pictures and I am starting to produce my Magazine cover, (as this is the one I am doing first)
I took 3 possible photographs for my magazine cover and the 3 are below:

Option 1
Option 3

Option 2
I showed each photo to my focus group and had a vote to see which they preferred, I also took part in the voting:

Option 1 - 0
Option 2 - 3
Option 3 - 3

This left me with a dilemma as I preferred option 3, however with option 2, there is more space above her head for the masthead of the magazine, and when looking closely at option 3, I found the picture seemed to be slightly blurry and so I thought option 2 would be the best decision. Nobody voted for option 1 because with the jacket closed it seems like the image is almost shutting out the viewer which isn't very welcoming/appealing for the buyer.

Time Management Update

It is now the 6th January and I have now completed all of my planning and research work, which is up to date with where I should be according to my new deadlines, (see previous time management update)
I have arranged to take all of my pictures tomorrow, which is Saturday the 7th, at my house in Cleobury Mortimer and so on Monday I will be ready with my finished photographs ready to edit together and produce my magazine front cover, content page and double page spread.

Risk Assessment

In order to make sure it is safe to take all of the photos I need to carry out a risk assessment, after visiting the locations that the pictures will be taken, I came up with a list of possible/potential danger:

Potential danger: Model could fall of the table
Potential outcomes: could injure themselves, bumps's or broken bones.
Actions to avoid potential outcomes: make sure everybody is very careful around the table, place the model directly int he center of the table instead of near the sides, when getting onto the table people will support her when getting up and down.
Further comments: As the table is quite low and I am taking precautions for the model so she is less likely to injure herself the outcome of a big injury is unlikely, if however she does fall I will get first aid and call an ambulance if necessary.

Potential danger: The table could break
Danger of model falling or the
the table breaking
Potential outcomes: The model could get injured, possible broken bones
Actions to avoid potential outcomes: Test the table before the model gets on it to see how much weight the table can sustain, I will do this by placing a heavy object on the table and seeing if the table reacts in a good/bad way.
Further comments: In the past people have sat on the table and it has been fine so I'm sure it will be fine, however if any injuries do occur I will have a first aid kit and I can ring emergency services if necessary.

Potential danger: There are cables near to wear the model will be standing
Potential outcomes: The model could trip over on the cables and injure herself
Actions to avoid potential outcomes: Before I take the photographs or the model arrives I will move all of the wires, and I will remind the model that there are plugs near to where she is standing so to not go near that area
Further comments: This means the model will be no where near the plugs and wont trip over, the plugs are also located near the ground and my model will be standing which reduces potential risk

Potential danger: As it is on a drive, a car could drive past
Potential outcomes: The car could hit my model causing injury to him
Actions to avoid potential outcomes: The drive way is a private drive and so I will make sure everybody who is allowed access to the drive knows that I am taking pictures and tell them what day/time so they make sure they don't drive past. I will also put some cones up near to where I am taking the pictures so if there is another car that appears they will stop before they reach where I am taking the photograph
Further comments: The likeliness of a car hitting my model is slim as the drive is quite long and so they would see that I am taking photographs and would stop, cars usually drive very slowly up the drive anyway and so the risk inst very likely

Potential danger: The model could fall on the cobble road
Potential outcomes: The model could cause injury to himself
Actions to avoid potential outcomes: I will remind the model that the road is not very safe and this will help as he will be wary of falling over
Further comments:   It is fairly unlikely the model will fall over as it is just a road, so the potential risk is minimal

Planning 2

After reading what my focus group think about my thoughts so far I have decided to add a t shirt with a skull or something that looks slightly 'rock&roll' related, for example possibly some stars or frills) on it to my props list so my cover star car wear it to add to the look, it will look something like the one below, however not exactly the same - it may change slightly (so it still looks a bit glamorous) I will have to buy this and online sites show it will cost around £10.00, I will buy this before the 6th January in order to take my photographs that following weekend and it will be my responsibility to get this, I will also try and paint the lips of my model red with a black outline like recommended however if this doesn't look very professional, I may just have red lips - I already have the make-up in order to do this and so will not need to find/buy this from somewhere else.

Shots lists

Shot 1: Medium Close Up of Livv against my wallpaper - a similar shot is shown to the right...

Shot 2: Long shot of Jemma standing against a white back ground, an example of a similar shot is below...

Shot 3: Long shot of Jess lieing on a table with her legs 90 degrees in the air, because this is quite a complex and unique shot I have no example for this shot, however it will be similar to the shot above as you will be able to see the whole of the body and it will be taken from a distance.

Shot 4: Long shot of Ben sat against a car, again this will be similar to shot 2 and 3 as it will be taken from a distance and the whole of his body will be in the shot.

Shot 5: Median Long Shot of Ben against a white back ground holding a guitar across his body, an example of a similar median long shot is shown to the right...

Locations

I am going to be taking my front cover photograph against the wallpaper in my room, it is black and has velvety lamp shades across it, I think it will look good because it will really contrast against her blonde hair and make her really stand out. I don't need any permission for this as it is in my room.

The content page photographs will be taken lieing on my dining room table, the table is like cracked glass and so I think it will be a really cool effect. this is shown to the left.
The other content page picture will be taken against a plain white wall in my house as I will be cropping her body out and so the background inst important and I'd like it as plain as possible. Likewise with the photo of my double page spread star when he is standing still with the guitar.

Finally I will  take the final picture outside my house, my car will be parked next to a cobble wall and the model will sit and lean onto the car. As all of the photographs will be taken on my property I wont need permission from any one to take the photographs.

Audience research 3

I showed my focus group my models and the props I plan to use when taking the photographs to get their opinion of what they thought about the ideas and whether they thought they would look good in the magazine, subject to the genre I have chosen.
Below I have copies and pasted an email from Hannah Clifford and another from Gemma Lees.

Hey Samm, I thought that the models all looked okay, I think they'll look better when you have made them up with lots of dark eye make up ect, which I assume you are doing because you have lots of it in your props! I also like your thinking about the leather as it swings with the rock look good yet your still keeping it casual and 'feminine' with the bright different colour make ups and the feathers! Not sure what the guy is for but look forward to hearing more!

Hi Samm, You okay? Thought the female models all looked very feminine and glamorous I suppose? So if I was you I would really rock them up with black make up and things, maybe big hair if your still trying to keep that with a bit of an edge? A bit like the one girl called Livv, really dark and mysterious. If I was you I'd make them wear like skull tops or something edgey, like tears and rips to keep it more on the rock side rather than the glamerous to keep it towards the rock audience. The guy looks like he needs rocking up a bit too, maybe some tattoos or something will give him more of a rock vibe? Hope it helped, see ya soon, Gem x

Costume and Props

Below shows all of the costume and props that I need, where I will get it from, the cost and who is in charge of getting it.

Costume/Prop items, cost & source:

Dark and bright pink make up
Bright coloured lipsticks and other eye make up
- I have a lot of make up, so this wont cost anything and I am in charge of getting this.

Leather jacket/shorts
Other leather/black tight clothing, finger less gloves
 - I also own all of these and so this has no cost and I will be in charge of getting them.

Electric Guitar - Jess Kelly owns an electric guitar and so I am going to borrow it of her, this wont cost anything and she will be in charge of getting it/giving it to me.

Car - We will use my car and so this is free and it will be my responsibility.

Fake tattoo's - My brother has a fake tattoo sleeve and so I will borrow this of him and it wont cost anything, he is in charge of getting this for me.

Red jeans & a white top - My male model will wear these when he                        takes the photo's.

Time Management Update

All of my planning and research work has not yet been updated to my blog, this is because I have been out of the country for the new year and so haven't had access to a computer. For this reason I am slightly behind on some of my planning and research work however as I still need to be organised I have new goals and deadlines: I will finish the whole process of my planning and research section by 6th January, ready to take my photographs and edit together my magazine cover.
